More About Kiwanis Club of Lake Norman

The Lake Norman Kiwanis Club is an active non-profit association dedicated to improving the lives of hundreds of children and families in the Lake Norman region. This club is part of Kiwanis International, a service organization whose mission is “improving the world one community and one child at a time.”

PROGRAMS OUR CLUB SUPPORTS MusicalMinds: MusicalMinds is a free holistic after-school music program at Blythe Elementary School that is changing the lives of children through music education. Eligible first through fourth grade students develop social, academic and music skills. The program was started by a group of Kiwanis members, and is now a free-standing non-profit that is the beneficiary of some of the club’s fundraising efforts. Learn more at Terrific Kids: In conjunction with Paula Rao, the principal of JV Washam Elemntary School, our club recognizes over 150 children once a month through our Terrific Kids program. Each child is nominated by their peers for achieving excellence in certain qualities. Recipients are given a special bumper sticker and recognized at a school assembly where club members participate. Key and Builders Clubs: Key and Builders Clubs are designed to teach the importance of community service to youth. Our organization supports 5 area High Schools with our Key Club program and 2 middle schools with the Builders Club. The participating high schools include: Community School of Davidson, Cox Mill, Hopewell, Hough, and LKN Charter. The middle schools served are Bailey Middle and LKN Charter. Each member of the Key club is required to participate in 50 hours of community service each year. College Scholarships: We award $4000 in college scholarships to eligible Key Club members. The students submit an essay describing what they learned about leadership or about what it means to serve others who are less fortunate. It is truly amazing what an 18 year old student learns from getting involved in their community. Aktion Club: The Lake Norman Kiwanis sponsors an Aktion Club composed of special needs adults (18 years of age or older). Formed in 2006, the club has averaged 20+ participants each year. In 2014, our Aktion Club was recognized as the most outstanding club in Mecklenburg County for the programs and projects it undertakes. Our members participate in the monthly meeting of the club, which takes place at the Lake Norman Chamber. Each spring, our members support the Aktion Club in their sales of Checkers hockey tickets, which is a fun fundraising event for all involved! Each December, our club hosts a special Christmas program where we serve a meal, listen to Christmas stories and scripture, and sing holiday carols.
