Regular physical activity is essential for healthy aging and provides substantial benefits to the mental, social, and physical well-being of older adults. Older adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity such as walking, biking, or swimming each week. Four out of five (70 million) older adults 50 years and older in America suffer from one or more chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. However, the availability of evidence-based physical activity interventions that allow older adults to socialize and engage in physical activity is one important way to help them manage their conditions, maintain functional independence, and remain vital contributors to their communities. The National Recreation Park and Association has provided a grant to the Mooresville Park and Recreation, which is partnering with the South Iredell Senior Center, to increase the availability and reach of this evidence-based physical activity program. Fit & Strong classes will be taught at the South Iredell Senior Center on Mondays and Fridays 1:30 – 3 p.m. from March 12 until June 4. Class will not be held on Memorial Day, Mon., May 28.  The class and fitness equipment are being provided for FREE as part of the grant. Registration is required. Call the Senior Center at 704-662-3337 to register.
